Savor the Lasts
This year we dedicated the scholarship in memory of Danielle’s dad, Steven G. Brown. Elizabeth is a freshman at The University of Richmond in Virginia. Her essay was selected due to Steve’s passion for baseball and his love for watching his granddaughter play softball – it really hit close to home. “Savor the Lasts” was expertly crafted.

“Savor the Lasts”
I started playing softball when I was seven years old. As a starfish in PGSL, my skills were not quite apparent. What was glaringly obvious throughout my entire softball career, however, was my love for quality time with my teammates.
I started at NCDS four years later, and this love for teammates and friends grew even further, even off the softball field. My very first friend from NCDS, Maggie, joined the softball team when we were sophomores. She is pictured farthest left. This picture was taken after out senior night game this past May, right after my best friend Sarah, pictured to my right, dumped a Gatorade jug of water on me with help from our freshmen.
I was not and never had been the best player on any of the NCDS softball teams that I was part of. Yet my love for the sport, and most importantly the people, made softball at NCDS my favorite part of spring. As a captain during my last two years of high school, fostering a loving community on the team was my favorited part of the job.
I think of this picture all the time. I have it hung up in my dorm room to remind me of the significance of loving those around me. From one of the most bittersweet days I’ve experienced, this picture captures some of the most important people and places in my life.
